Supporting Young People

School avoidance. We're here for them, not the attendance target.

Our role isn't to fix school avoidance. It's to help young people understand themselves, recognise their strengths, build self-worth, and feel safe enough to unmask.

A reflection from a conversation with a young person experiencing school avoidance. We weren't talking about attendance targets or getting them back into school full-time. They spotted that other professionals had an agenda. They needed someone who was there just for them.

So we talked about what helps.

They spoke about adults in school who treated them like a person, noticed when they were struggling, and made small adjustments that helped them feel more comfortable.

They spoke about being given space to engage in their own way, rather than being pushed beyond what they could manage.

Then they said something that stayed with us:

"If more lessons felt like that, I'd probably come to school more."

As we explored it together, we realised something important. They didn't want special treatment. They just wanted permission to be themselves. To stop masking and to feel safe.

The anxiety they experienced around school wasn't laziness or defiance. It was information.

We also explored strengths. Social awareness. Pattern recognition. The abilities that can become real assets in education, work, and life.

There was laughter, curiosity, and pride in how far they had come.

A few months ago, anxiety felt like an enemy. Today, they understand it and work alongside it. With time, they will master it.

We restore peace and self-worth while others work on attendance.

We're here for them, not for a target. No agenda. Just a safe space to understand themselves and build a future that works for them.
